I knew this day was coming . . . The day A became mobile. Of course this day would come at a time that our lives are in total chaos as we are in the midst of moving.
I’ll be honest, our current house was not entirely baby proof before we started moving. Of course we did the major things like put up protective outlet covers and such. However, there is no gate system, and no way to safely confine my daughter to one room. I always assumed that we would be in our new house long before A was really mobile. After all, we did put the offer on the house we are buying in May and our original close date was July 13th. Then A was far from showing signs of doing much more than sitting in place playing with her toys and I thought why spend a bunch of money baby proofing a house we will just be moving from in a few short weeks. Yet here we are still in our tiny cramped house in the middle of packing and my daughter has suddenly learned to crawl and get into EVERYTHING!
I feel like we are in a really bad game show . . . It’s Five Minutes to Trouble, put your baby down and see what trouble she can get into in five minutes or less. While it used to take my daughter 10 minutes of back and forth motion to get to her desired object, I now find I can’t even turn my back. In a split second she can find some potential danger and I find my self explaining over and over again cardboard boxes and newspapers are not for chewing, packing tape is not a toy, and family heirlooms that I am trying to pack are not for throwing.
I know it is not A’s fault, she is merely curious to explore her surroundings and there are so many more things to explore these days. So now we are baby proofing the house that we will be in only a week maybe two tops, and I am kicking myself for my perpetual procrastination and my daughter is a bit miffed that her favorite ‘toys’ are suddenly missing. Yet another lesson in mamahood learned the hard way . . .
