confessions of a rookie mom: 4 conventional baby items I find completely useless

When I embarked on this journey called motherhood pregnant and glowing baby registry scanner in hand, I had some very definite ideas on what baby products I would need and which ideas I would find completely useless.  It is funny to me now looking back on how much has changed since I actually birthed my baby and invited her into my home.  This is why when I hear someone say the words “When I become a mother …” I smile on the inside, because I now know, just like all mother’s do, never say never.

  1. The Crib:  I love our crib it is well made, beautiful, and just what I wanted.  After E set it up in A’s room I would stand in her room and imagine our little baby sleeping soundly in her beautiful crib.  In reality, besides a few short naps here and there, an occasional place to wrangle my baby girl while I put clothes away, or a makeshift photo studio, this very expensive piece of furniture rarely gets any use.  Instead, we co-sleep having A sleep in a co-sleeper by our bed or on particularly rough nights, in our bed (something I swore I would never do).  Maybe this item will get more use in the future because this mama could use a good night’s sleep and no one still sleeps in their parent’s room forever (Ihope), but for now it is collecting dust.
  2. Baby Food Processor and Traditional Baby Food:  I knew from the moment I was pregnant I would be making A’s food.  When I opened a Baby Bullet complete with a cool recipe book from my mom at my shower I was thrilled, it was exactly what I wanted.  I thought of all of the yummy nutritious meals I would make for my little girl.  Then shortly after having A I stumbled upon Baby Led Weaning, I researched it, talked to E about it and we decided to try it when we were ready to start solids.  So while I am still making nutritious meals for my baby, we are letting her feed herself, so we have no need for the processor (sorry mom).
  3. Baby Wipes:  While I knew I was going to use cloth diapers, using cloth wipes hadn’t really crossed my mind.  Then we got our first diaper service delivery and saw cloth wipes were included.  Still I thought the disposable wipes would be more convenient.  A few blow outs later and I discovered the beauty of using a spray bottle and a cloth wipe for diaper changes, I never plan to go back, I’m hooked!
  4. Baby Carrier: While I gave this one a valiant effort, I always hated our baby carrier.  Then I found out they weren’t really safe to use on top of carts in the store and it was retired in favor of the super comfy convertible car seat and a wrap or a sling.  I think I may just skip the baby carrier altogether with the next baby.

So that is my list, what are some things you thought you would need before you had a baby that you didn’t use?  Be sure to share in the comments :)

  1. The baby carrier tops my list. Olivia hated being in it. She would scream while in the car or just being carried in it. When we decide to have #2, we will just buy a convertible car seat, similar to the one we have now

Okay, I actually liked 1, 3, and 4.  I never bought #2 because I figured I could make my own baby food using supplies we already had.  We did a combination of baby led weaning/giving purees.

Hi paige! There’s nothing new or strange something to do like this because being a mother is the most exciting experience for every woman so to make comfortable own infant we do a lot of what not everything is essential :) . Good luck for your sweet baby!

We thought we’d use the baby harness everywhere but we took it out of the box once, looked at the straps, and promptly stuck it back into the box to never look at again. To each their own, but she was just happy to be in her carseat so we stuck with it.
