back from the edge of the universe

I’ve been MIA … I Know, I’m sorry.

So much has been going on in my life and so much has changed.  My world is now short to very special people.  I lost my Oma and Eric lost his Grandpa within a very short time of eachother.  When you lose people you love it has a way of making you reorganize your priorities and something had to take the back burner.  I had to remember why I started to blog in tge first place … Which was to write about my baby’s growth and milestones, not to get likes,  not to get fans.

I tend to go overboard at times, I want to do things to big.  Sometimes I need to think small.  So I’m back, but at a reduced capacity because it is more important to me to enjoy A growing up than it is to write about it.

five minutes to trouble

I knew this day was coming . . . The day A became mobile. Of course this day would come at a time that our lives are in total chaos as we are in the midst of moving.

20120830-113153.jpg

I’ll be honest, our current house was not entirely baby proof before we started moving. Of course we did the major things like put up protective outlet covers and such. However, there is no gate system, and no way to safely confine my daughter to one room. I always assumed that we would be in our new house long before A was really mobile. After all, we did put the offer on the house we are buying in May and our original close date was July 13th. Then A was far from showing signs of doing much more than sitting in place playing with her toys and I thought why spend a bunch of money baby proofing a house we will just be moving from in a few short weeks. Yet here we are still in our tiny cramped house in the middle of packing and my daughter has suddenly learned to crawl and get into EVERYTHING!

I feel like we are in a really bad game show . . . It’s Five Minutes to Trouble, put your baby down and see what trouble she can get into in five minutes or less. While it used to take my daughter 10 minutes of back and forth motion to get to her desired object, I now find I can’t even turn my back. In a split second she can find some potential danger and I find my self explaining over and over again cardboard boxes and newspapers are not for chewing, packing tape is not a toy, and family heirlooms that I am trying to pack are not for throwing.

I know it is not A’s fault, she is merely curious to explore her surroundings and there are so many more things to explore these days. So now we are baby proofing the house that we will be in only a week maybe two tops, and I am kicking myself for my perpetual procrastination and my daughter is a bit miffed that her favorite ‘toys’ are suddenly missing. Yet another lesson in mamahood learned the hard way . . .

pinterest fail | baked cheese crisps (kind of)

When I saw this pin on Pinterest I knew I had to make it because hello it is melty cheese covered in bread curbs, YUM! Since I had all of the ingredients on hand I didn’t waste anytime. I am still using breast feeding as my excuse to have a snack anytime, anywhere . . . A breast feeding mother needs those 500 extra calories a day, you know :-)

I sliced and froze my cheese and mixed my breadcrumbs. Then I dipped those babies in milk and breadcrumbs and popped them in the oven.

20120821-110401.jpg

My mouth watered in anticipation as the smell of cheesy goodness filled my home. Finally the timer buzzed and I walked to my oven to find . . .

20120821-110536.jpg

Yep, that’s right what was supposed to turn out to be cheesy bites of heaven, dissolved into a puddle of messy disappointment. Pinterest had failed me. E looked at my sad excuse for cheese balls and remarked that they looked exactly like the picture. Like a child I stuck my tongue out informing him that my intention had always been to make melted cheese crisps. Just like that I had turned my Pinterest Fail into a Pinterest Triumph as I carefully peeled my puddles of cheese off of the cookie sheet and took a bite. Somedays I am truly a genius, no? :-)

paige’s picks – noxicare natural pain reliever review

So before I start this post I need to give you a little background … I have had mild back pain off and on for months. It started in my 3rd trimester of pregnancy and it has never really gone away. This may or may not have something to do with my ever growing daughter who thinks she needs to spend the last hours of sleep sleeping on top of me … Any-who, I was chosen to review Noxicare Natural Pain Reliever and I thought “Coolio, I love me some natural pain relief!” However, after receiving the product I realized it is not recommended for those who are nursing or pregnant. I am still nursing little A so instead of trying the product myself, I did the next best thing … I gave it to my mother-in-law. This woman has all kinds of aches and pains, so really it was the perfect solution right now my MIL is reading this ready to kill me ;-) . So here is my review of Noxicare Natural Pain Relief based on the opinions of my mother-in-law, Martha.

When I gave the Noxicare to my mother-in-law and ask her to try it she looked at me like I was a crazy hippie, which to be fair I am so really nothing new.  She said she would try it, but she really didn’t see how it could work since it was just some herbs and stuff.  She decided to rub it on her elbow first.  Her first observation was that the cream didn’t smell bad.  There is really no smell at all, which was surprising because most pain reliever creams have a pretty strong smell.  We visited for a bit and after about 10 minutes my mother-in-law started to flex her elbow.  Hmm, I can move my elbow without it hurting,” she said.  Even I was surprised that the cream worked that quickly on her.  She was so impressed she rubbed more on her shoulder.  After about another 10 minutes she reported that most of the tenderness was gone there as well.  She said she would try her feet later and keep me posted on how well it worked overall.

So now fast forward to last weekend . . . By this time Martha is in love with the Noxicare.  She has even shared some with her sister who suffers from psoriatic arthritis and now they are both in love.  They have requested that I find it 5 gallon drums.  I think maybe they want to bathe in it or something.  There you have it, I proved that sometimes crazy hippies are right and sometimes all natural pain relievers really work.

Noxicare comes in a cream and pill form.  It has seven all natural ingredients that work together to create a powerful pain reliever:

  1. Turmeric: recognized for its anti-inflammatory properties.
  2. Willow Bark: has been used to treat pain and inflammation for centuries.
  3. Ginger: helps relieve muscle strains, arthritis and rheumatism.
  4. Holy Basil: an anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, antibacterial and antiviral.
  5. Rosemary Extract: great for joint or musculoskeletal pain.
  6. Alpha Lipoic Acids: antioxidants used to treating diabetic neuropathy and increasing blood flow to the nerves.
  7. Boswellia Extract: an anti-inflammatory used to treat arthritis and joint pain.

eight

20120818-144517.jpg

You’re eight months old, can it be?!? Every day I look at you and it seems you have grown another inch, learned another trick, passed another milestone. Time is going too fast, my head is spinning.

  • You can pull yourself up
  • You crawl in reverse much to your frustration
  • You mimic sounds and faces
  • You say mama, dada, hey, hi, bye, something that sounds suspiciously like I Love You, ma num nums which means boobies, and you can sign milk and do so frequently :-)
  • You wave bye, bye, but haven’t caught on that waving hi is basically the same thing
  • You chant “Nein, Nein, NEIN!” when angry. This is of course hilarious and usually gets Mama & Dadums laughing, which is probably not the effect you were going for :-)
  • Oh, and you finally have a tooth … Apparently that ‘first tooth’ was just a calcium pearl silly Mama
  • You are so amazing little one and you become more so each and everyday!

Paige’s Picks – Costume Supercenter.com Infant Costume Review

A in Inky Black Kitty Costume from Costume Supercenter

My fabulous little costume model :-)

One of my favorite times of year is almost upon us … Halloween!! This year is especially exciting because now I have an adorable little girl to dress up! When I was picked by Costume Supercenter.com (the company that I have used two previous years to order costumes) to do a costume review, I was over the moon! From previous experience, I already knew they had a huge selection of costumes at great prices.

I have a little experience with Trick or Treating with infants from my nieces and nephews so I already had a set of criteria for what I was looking for in a Halloween costume for an infant.

    1. It has to be warm. More often than not, the night set for Trick or Treat is pretty chilly and you don’t want to be forced to cover up your little one’s costume with a coat.
    2. It has to be comfortable. I am all for dressing my little A up in the cutest clothes this side of the Mississippi, but I try to make sure she is going to be comfy in anything she is going to be wearing for an extended amount of time. This means no scratchy material or crazy contraptions.
    3. It has to be adorable. Provided that a costume meets my first two rules, I really want a costume that is really cute because right now It is my choice … In a few years she gets a voice and when she dresses as a zombie one year I can go back to the sweet pictures of her on her first Halloween and remember how precious she was.

I underestimated how hard it would be to pick just one costume and I had to call in reinforcements, luckily Oma (my mom) is always willing to lend a hand when it comes to little A. Looking through all of the costumes there were several that met my requirements, but when we came to the Inky Black Kitty costume we knew it was the one! My daughter loves kitties and on top of that the costume included a mouse shaped rattle . . . I was sold.

A in her Inky Black Kitty costume from Costume Supercenter.com

    My little Kitty Kat

When A’s costume arrived, it was like Christmas, I was so excited to see how she would look. I have to say she looks quiet fetching dressed as a cat. The material the costume was made out of was very soft and it fit perfectly. A is currently between 6-9 and 9-12 month clothes so I ordered the 12-18 month size costume. It’s a bit long in the length, but she is not swimming in it, so I’m glad I went with the bigger size. I like that the body was one piece and is footed for extra warmth. The head piece is still soft and will be warm like a hat. The costume seems very well made and I am not worried about it holding up for the various Halloween events we have to attend.

My only complaint is that the bow is sewn on as bow tie so it looks more like a little boy’s costume. It would be nice if the bow was interchangeable so you could have be a bow tie for a boy or a hair bow for a girl. I plan on removing the bow and sewing it on to the head piece before Halloween.

Bottom line . . . If you are looking for a cute Halloween costume for you or your little one check out Costume Supercenter.com. You can’t beat their vast selection and quality. Best of all buying a costume from them, won’t break the bank!

    five question friday – 8/10/2012

    1. Thunder storms- love them or hate them?
Well I guess that depends on if I am inside or outside.  I love watching thunderstorms from a safe distance, but I hate having to go out in the rain (especially if it is one of the rare days I spend more than 10 minutes on my hair!)

    2. Do your kids get back to school clothes
Since my daughter isn’t in school yet, no, but she will some day I assume.  For now she has plenty of clothes . . . The girl has a closet that would put and fashionista to shame!

    3. Do you golf? Do you watch it?
    No and No

    4. Showers or baths?
I love a good bath, but these days I am lucky to get a 5 minute shower, ah mamahood!

    5. What’s the strangest meal you ever ate?
I once tried a bite of frog legs, but I would consider most of my husband’s favorite childhood meals a little strange (there are these things called Cartwheels yuck!) . . . Sorry Martha ;)

    my fair lady

We took advantage of the mild weather last weekend to participate in two of my husband’s favorite summer activities . . . County Fairs & Tractor shows. I will admit that my attendance at these events usually takes a bit of compormise and convincing, but hey that is marriage.

This year was different though, seeing things through my daughter’s eyes , watching her experiencing the sights and smells for the first time made the whole journey more exciting. I love how she changes me and makes pay attention to what is around me. So this year, instead of rushing through to just get out of there, I took my time to enjoy, watch, and listen.

    20120809-115454.jpg

A, always in the first stare of fashion, was rocking her sun hat & pink bow as we took in the sights and smells of the county fair.

    20120809-115715.jpg

We stopped to visit the animals, but A has been a bit leery of farm animals since our recent trip to the petting zoo. Apparently, the fall out occurred when the goats kept taking what she thought were her crackers … Little did she know they were goat crackers and the goat probably did her a favor. Although I can’t confirm with certainty, I don’t think goat crackers are very tasty.

    20120809-120425.jpg

A stroll through the museum of days past had me thankful that I was born in the 20th century. While I am all for going back to basics, I draw my line at laundry :-/

    20120809-120650.jpg

The next day brought us to the tractor show. I took in the beauty of the valley as E took in the beauty of his beloved old tractors most of them made before I was even born :-)

    20120809-121135.jpg

We ended the day with A grabbing a snack before we hit the road. I shamelessly nursed her in public sans cover, but the great thing about the country is nobody cared.
